Michael Beach — “Clifton Powell: They Be Acting”

“I’m going to the party, just not with you.”

It’s very likely that you know Michael Beach if you rock with this site and have any memories of the 90’s. One would say that 90’s Hollywood had Beach out here getting the roles for characters that made you root against him. Waiting to Exhale gave us a Beach who dropped the boldest, most ill timed break up conversation of all time (John could have told Bernie his intentions before he went through her prep). Michael’s acting credits span back to 1986 signaling a 40 plus year run in acting. Well before he would be etched into our memories as Mr. Darnell or Miles, he was climbing the acting ladder from the streets of Roxbury, MA. Michael Beach’s career represents all that the “Clifton Powell: They Be Acting” Award means to our network.

The Julliard trained Michael Beach came up pursuing football instead of acting. As fate would have it, an injury launched him into a profession that has lasted over forty years. His mom was noted as a city planner raising four kids in Roxbury, Mass. He would leave Noble and Greenough School in nearby Dedham to NYC, where by 1984, he was a Drama Award Winner for Outstanding Achievement.

The First Role

By 1986, a fresh, bare-faced Beach would be cast in Vengeance: The Story of Tony Cimo as Rudolph Tyner. Tyner is a 24 year old NY born, death row inmate and the target of Tony Cimo for taking the lives of his mother and her husband.

A couple of TV roles and several movies would feature Beach before he would land in the 1989 Lean On Me, where most of us remember him as the teacher who couldn’t help but pick up a piece of paper while Mr. Clark was addressing the staff. Five more years would pass before Michael would appear on my radar again. He had a two episode role as Isaiah in the series South Central.

Waiting to Exhale (1995)

It was 1995 when Beach would portray a Black man that fueled the rage of his ex-wife when he elected to leave her for the woman that he found affection on his job. John and Troy (Mykelti Williamson) would storm into the zeitgeist as two men who women would despise for years to come, but Hollywood was not done casting Beach in such roles.

From John to Miles…The Villainy Sets In

Michael Beach would stamp his legacy audiences once again before WTE could even cool. He would be cast as Miles in 1997’s Soul Food, and while so many side stories would last over the years, Miles getting smashed by Cousin Faith while being discovered by his wife made Beach the man who Black audiences would love to hate. To think that he started as a convicted murderer being targeted by a mad man, his characters spiraled into a land of casting villainy that would leave casual viewers to dislike his characters before even understanding their motivations. This is so much so that IMDB has noted that is trademark is taking on characters with questionable morals.
